August 18, 2009 - On the occasion of the 75th birthday party for the Blue Hill Garden Club
Today we honor Ellen Anthony, a hard-working, steadfast member of the Blue Hill Garden Club for over 52 years.
Ellen joined the Club in 1957, when she and her husband Ken were “summer people.” They moved here full-time from West Chester,
PA, in 1968, and Ellen was promptly elected Garden Club President. She was re-elected, and re-elected, and re-elected. In all, she
led the Club from 1968 to 1980, except for one term, in 1975-’76, when Louise Frederick served. Some of our club’s finest flower
shows were held under Ellen’s leadership, winning at least two national awards.
The Town of Blue Hill appreciated her energy and intelligence, too. In 1972, Ellen joined the Planning Board, and she worked with
the Blue Hill Hospital Auxiliary from its inception. Her years as Town Tree Warden brought her a national award in 1978. The
Mauntel Certificate, an individual award for outstanding conservation efforts, had only been awarded 5 times previously. Although
available for annual award, it is given by the National Council of State Garden Clubs only when a truly outstanding candidate is
found. Ellen’s unflagging efforts to save Blue Hill’s stately American elms from the ravages of Dutch elm disease certainly fit that
category. Although there is still no cure for the disease, Blue Hill is one of the few places remaining where one can see mature
American elm trees, and we have over 50 of them.
In 1986, Ellen was named Person of the Year by the Blue Hill Chamber of Commerce for her 18 years of Public Service.
Ellen, we all thank you for the years of leadership and service to the Blue Hill Garden Club. Please accept this Certificate of
Outstanding Service as a very small token of our appreciation.
